Luggage locks - Solenoid bolt

A solenoid bolt is a type of electronic-mechanical locking mechanism. This type of lock is characterized by the use of a solenoid to throw the bolt. Sophisticated solenoid bolt locks may use microprocessors to perform voltage regulation, reduce power consumption, and/or provide access control. Depending on the strength of the solenoid, some models can provide a holding force on the order of 1000 kg. A solenoid bolt can be designed either to fail open (the lock opens on power loss) or to fail closed (the device is locked upon power loss); cf fail safe. Some models may be suitable for high-security sites.

Tsa locks for luggage - Rotary combination lock

A rotary combination lock is a lock commonly used to secure safes and as an unkeyed padlock mechanism. This type of locking mechanism consists of a single dial which must be rotated left and right in a certain combination in order to open the lock.

Contained inside the mechanism are discs, usually three, with notches that must be aligned to allow for a release of the piece holding the lock in place, and the lock to open. The position of the discs are manipulated by turning the dial left and right; on the dial is a catch - a sort of nub - and on each side of the discs is also a small catch. As the dial rotates, there will not be enough space for the catch on the dial to pass the catch on that side of the disc, and so the disc will begin to rotate with the dial. As this disc rotates, its catch will in turn begin rotating the next disc in a similar fashion. Once all discs and the dial are rotating together, the dial is rotated until the last disc is in place and the notch is in the proper positioning, then by rotating the dial in the other direction, the catches will all disconnect, starting from the dial to the first disc and so on until they connect from the other side and the discs begin to rotate together by the same method but in the opposite direction. In this way, the remaining discs are able to rotate and change their position without further disturbing the last disc. The process is completed back and forth until all discs are in place, and the lock is released.

Luggage locks - Louth Navigation

The Louth Navigation canal ran 11 miles from the River Louth to Tetney in Lincolnshire, England, through 8 locks. 6 of the 8 locks were built in an unusual way with the sides of the lock chambers consisting of 4 eliptical bays, this was apparently to make them stronger. Some of these locks still survive, the remains of one can be seen at Alvingham. The two other locks had conventional straight walls. The canal obtained its Act of Parliament in 1763 (although the canal had been planned as far back as 1756) and construction started in 1767. The canal opened in 1770. The canal cost £28,000 to build and was able to carry seagoing boats.

For much of it’s life the canal was leased by the Chaplin family who were able to run it at something of a profit with estimated tolls getting as high as £5000 a year in the late 1820s.Lost canals and Waterways of Britain Ronald Russell page 217 ISBN 0-7153-8072-9

The coming of the railways lead to a decline in the use of the canal and World War I killed what traffic was left. The final blow was the devastation caused by the Louth Flood of 1920 to the Riverhead area, the terminus of the canal. The canal closed in 1924.

The Louth Navigation Trust have since restored the tow path which may be walked and parts of the canal are in shallow water. They are currently engaged in an ambitious scheme to restore the full length of the canal by 2020.

Luggage locks - Whitchurch Lock

Whitchurch Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames in England. The lock is located in the Oxfordshire village of Whitchurch-on-Thames but the weir crosses the river to the Berkshire village of Pangbourne. Both lock and weir are owned and managed by the Environment Agency.

The long serving lock keeper is Brian Butcher who has worked on the river for more than forty years starting as an apprentice engineer for Bert Bushnell’s hire fleet based in Maidenhead in the 1960s.

Access to the lock

Whitchurch Lock is one of the few locks on the River Thames which has no public access other than by boat.

Reach above the lock

The reach passes along the Chiltern Hills, culminating in Goring Gap. On the Oxfordshire side are Hartslock beech woods, named after a lock that was removed in 1910. On the Berksire side is Child Beale Wildlife Park. The Thames Path crosses Whitchurch Bridge into Oxfordshire and continues through Whitchurch away from the river as it goes round Coombe Park, returning to the river at Hartslock. It continues on the Oxfordshire river bank to Goring.

Luggage locks - Cookham Lock

Cookham Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames near Cookham, Berkshire. It is owned and managed by the Environment Agency. The lock is set in a lock cut which creates Formosa Island and it is surrounded by woods.

There is a road from Cookham to Formosa Island and the lock.

The river is picturesque and described as Wind in the Willows country. Kenneth Graham based much of his book on this part of the Thames.

Cookham was home to the artist Stanley Spencer’s whose works include Swan Upping at Cookham.

A party bus (also known as a Party Ride, limo bus, limousine bus or luxury bus) is a large motor vehicle designed to carry 20 or more passengers. Party buses are often driven by chauffeurs.

Party buses offer seating capacities from 20 to 50 passengers and include more amenities and standard equipment than most other forms of ground transportation. These amenities may include upgraded electrical systems, fast idle controller, AM/FM stereo with CD player, power/heated remote control mirrors, power door locks and windows, upgraded seats and fabric, strip-poles, air actuated passenger entry door, video and audio systems, luggage partitions, back-up cameras, seat and fabric upgrades, smoke machines, laser lights, disco lights, strobe lights, on-board restroom, ADA equipment and a large array of floor plans to suit demanding transportation needs.

Party buses are primarily used for, although not limited to, weddings, proms and bachelor and bachelorette parties as well as round trips to casinos, nights on the town, personalized drop offs and pick ups at various bars and nightclubs, birthdays and city tours.

While some party buses are used for week long tours and events, most are used for day trips and events. Most party buses, however, operate as livery vehicles, providing upmarket competition to limousines and taxicabs.

Luggage locks - 5 Lever Lock

5 Lever Lock is a type of lock often required for home insurance. There are various ‘grades’ but the current British Standard is usually required for insurance purposes.
The lever mechanism is really only seen in the UK and some parts of Scandinavia, and locks using this form of mechanism are frequently referred to as ‘Chubb Locks’ although there are a great many manufacturs.

The Lever

A flat non ferrous metal shaped double acting movable ‘detainer’ in a lock. Usually pivoted, but sometimes slide. The levers in a lock have to be moved by the key to operate the lock. The belly of the lever is cut away to various depths to provide different combinations. A lever will have pockets and gates through which the bolt stump moves during unlocking

Luggage locks - Tubular lock pick

A tubular lock pick is a specialized lockpicking tool used for opening a tubular pin tumbler lock. Tubular lock picks are all very similar in design and come in sizes to fit all major tubular locks, including 6, 7, and 8-pin locks.

The tool is simply inserted into the lock and turned clockwise with medium tension. As the tool is pushed into the lock, each of the picks is slowly forced down until they stop, thus binding the driver pins behind the shear line of the lock. When the final pick is pushed down, the shear plane is clear and the lock opens. This can usually be accomplished in a matter of seconds.

Most tubular lock picks come with a “decoder” which lets the locksmith know at what depths the pins broke the shear plane. By using the decoding key after the lock has been picked, the locksmith can cut a tubular key to the correct pin depths and thus avoid having to replace the lock.

In 2004 it was widely publicized that the barrel of a cheap ballpoint pen would act as an effective lock pick for many brands of tubular lock.

Luggage locks - Balance lock

The balance lock was a type of lock to transport boats up and down a hillside on a canal.

Boats were to ride in caissons, essentially bathtubs, of water which were to be hauled up and down the hillside by chain, being balanced by another tub of water. It was patented by James Fussell during his work on the Dorset and Somerset Canal.
