A deadbolt is a special kind of locking mechanism, providing more security than an ordinary key-operated lock because the weight of the locking bar is usually sufficient to increase break-in time to 10 or 15 minutes.
Unlike most spring-bolt locks, in which the bolt is held in place only by the pressure of a spring and can easily be retracted, a deadbolt lock cannot be opened except by rotating the lock cylinder.
A variant of the standard deadbolt is the vertical deadbolt, which generally rests on top of a door. Vertical deadbolts resist jimmying (in which an intruder inserts a pry bar between the door and the frame and tries to pry the bolt out of the jamb).
Security Features
Many designs are available from manufacturers. Various manufacturers have patented designs offering unique solutions to prevent the locks from being defeated by picking, lock bumping prying, and other forceful attacks.

The Southern Railway (SR) gave the designation CW to the fleet of AC electric multiple units used on the lines to Coulsdon and Wallington. They were planned by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway but were delayed by the Grouping and were introduced by the Southern Railway.
Construction
The CW (Coulsdon and Wallington stock) units were built in 1923-1924, as the last electric train stock for use on the LBSCR AC overhead electrified lines in South London. This stock comprised some hundred carriages, which were used in five car formations (Driving Trailer Third + Driving Trailer Composite + Motor Luggage Van + Trailer Composite + Driving Trailer Third).
The stock, built by the Metropolitan Carriage Wagon & Finance Company at Birmingham, was as follows:
- 21 Motor Luggage Vans
- 60 Driving Trailers
- 20 Trailers
The Motor Luggage Vans (nicknamed “Milk Vans”) each had four 250 horsepower GEC traction motors.
After the replacement of the AC overhead equipment by the 660 V DC third rail system adopted as standard by the SR, the carriages that formed these units were rebuilt accordingly, the Motor Luggage Vans becoming goods train guard’s vans.

A canal pound is the stretch of level water impounded between two canal locks. Canal pounds can vary in length from the non-existent, where two or more immediately adjacent locks form a lock staircase, to many miles.
History
Pounds came into being with the development of Pound locks to replace the earlier flash locks. A key feature of pound locks was that the intervening level between locks remained largely constant, as opposed to the varible levels created by the opening of flash locks.
Types of pound
Pounds can be described in various ways according to their situation;
Summit pound
A summit pound is formed at a summit on the canal, and where all the defining locks descend from the pound. Summit pounds are particularly important in canal design, as every boat entering or leaving the pound causes a loss of water. Summit pounds therefore need an independent form of water supply, which may take the form of weirs on adjacent rivers, reservoirs or pumping stations. Common practice during canal design was to make summit pounds as large as practically possible, in order that losing a lockful of water would not lower the water level too significantly. The Rochdale Canal is a good example of a canal with a relatively short summit pound, which requires restrictions on lock workings at certain times.
Sump pound
The inverse of a summit pound is a sump pound. In contrast to a summit pound, a sump pound is a point where every boat entering or leaving the pound causes an addition of water.
Lock pound
A pound which lies between two locks which lie only a short distance apart. Water levels in the pound are liable to fluctuate as the locks are used.
Side pound
A particular type of extremely short lock pound, which is extended sideways to make up for the short distance between locks so as to avoid excessive level fluctuations. Side pounds should not be confused with side ponds (without the u).

A Security Operations Center is a centralised unit in an organisation that deals with security issues.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA; an agency within the US Department of Homeland Security) has implemented Security Operations Centers (referred to as SOC) for most airports that have federalized security. The primary function of TSA Security Operations Centers are to act as a communication hub for security personnel, law enforcement, airport personnel and various other agencies involved in the daily operations of airports. SOC’s are manned 24-hours a day by SOC Watch Officers. Security Operations Center Watch Officers are trained in all aspects of airport and aviation security and are often required to work abnormal shifts. SOC Watch Officers also ensure that TSA personnel follow proper protocol in dealing with airport security operations. The SOC is usually the first to be notified of incidents at airports such as the discovery of prohibited items/contraband, weapons, explosives, hazardous materials as well as incidents regarding flight delays, unruly passengers, injuries, damaged equipment and various other types of potential security threats. The SOC in turn relays all information pertaining to these incidents to TSA federal security directors, law enforcement and TSA headquarters.
A Security Operations Center Watch Officer is an officer of the Transportation Security Administration who mans a Security Operations Center and is generally tasked with monitoring the daily operations of airport security and ensuring TSA personnel follow proper protocol in dealing with airport security operations. Airports are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and it is the duty of the SOC Watch Officer to ensure all potential security breaches are under control at all times.
Security Operations Center is a division at the University of Maryland’s Department of Public Safety that monitors one of the most advanced University run CCTV systems in the nation, consistent of more than 300 cameras. More can be found at http://www.umdps.umd.edu under Technology Services.

The name Ana has been used for five tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of two names that has been used for five storms in which none of them reached hurricane strength.
- 1979’s Tropical Storm Ana - formed east of the Lesser Antilles, crossed Leeward Islands, caused no damage or casualties.
- 1985’s Tropical Storm Ana - rounded Bermuda, neared Newfoundland but dissipated before striking.
- 1991’s Tropical Storm Ana - travelled parallel off the East Coast of the United States, caused no damage or casualties.
- 1997’s Tropical Storm Ana - wobbled off the Carolinas, threatened no land.
- 2003’s Tropical Storm Ana - the first recorded Atlantic storm to form in April, threatened no land.
The next time that the name ‘Ana’ will be used is in 2009.

Bray Lock is a lock and weir situated on the northern bank of the River Thames near Dorney, just above the M4 Motorway crossing of the Thames. It is a manned lock, and the lock keepers cottage is on an island between the lock and the weir. It is owned and managed by the Environment Agency. Bray itself and Maidenhead, Berkshire, England are on the opposite side of the river but can be reached from the lock.
Reach above the lock
Along the reach is Maidenhead, preceded by Brunel’s famous railway bridge. The Maidenhead bank is lined with large Edwardian houses. The Thames Path follows the Bucks (Eastern) bank to Maidenhead Bridge, which it crosses, and then proceeds on the Berkshire side to Boulter’s Lock.

ChanServ, on many IRC networks, is an IRC service which maintains channel registration and access information. If a channel is registered with ChanServ, its owners (and those they have designated) can use ChanServ to obtain control over the channel, gaining channel operator privileges. Most channel service bots also allow other sorts of channel management options, such as topic locks (in addition to +t), mode locks, and providing users automatically with operator status, half-operator status, voice, or other access, as designated by the channel owners. They may also provide some form of automated ban-list management.
There are several implementations of IRC services which have a ChanServ bot; some other services use other names, such as CS. The exact commands and features available depend on the service implementation and the network in question.

A lock is used when multiple users need to access a database concurrently. This prevents data from being corrupted or invalidated when multiple users try to write to the database. Any single user can only modify those database records (that is, items in the database) to which they have applied a lock that gives them exclusive access to the record until the lock is released.
There are two mechanisms for locking data in a database: pessimistic locking, and optimistic locking. Pessimistic locking is where a record or page is locked immediately when the lock is requested, while an optimistic lock is where a record or page is only locked when the changes made to that record are updated. The latter situation is only appropriate when there is less chance of someone needing to access the record while it is locked; otherwise it cannot be certain that the update will succeed because the attempt to update the record will fail if another user updates the record first. With pessimistic locking it is guaranteed that the record will be updated.
MS SQL Server was complained about lack of row-level locking capabilities. Until version 6.5, all locking was done at the page level (a 2K unit of data). The problem with a page-level locking mechanism surfaces when multiple records exist on the same page and multiple processes must access information on the same page. If the page is locked by a process, other processes must wait to access the data. These situations may result deadlocks.
The degree of locking can be controlled by isolation level.
